Mean Streets:
Helping NY Teens Caught in the Sex Trade

Wednesday, May 28th, 6:30 pm
Advertised in places like craigslist, sex with children is a thriving part of the NYC sex trade. Every year, kids as young as 12 are sexually exploited and can end up in jail rather than in programs to help them reclaim their young lives. Advocates and legislators are working to secure a law that would recognize these vulnerable teens as victims rather than criminals. Join us for a documentary film screening and community forum on changing laws and attitudes about teen sexual exploitation. LGBT Center | 208 W. 13th St. @ 7th Ave. | Call to RSVP 212.627.9895

Support a "Safe Harbor" for Sexually Exploited Kids

Under current law, child runaways caught in prostitution are treated like adults and charged as criminals. Advocates and legislators in New York are working to change this by establishing the Safe Harbor Act. The law would ensure that exploited children end up in safe houses instead of prisons, where they can obtain medical treatment and counseling. Learn more and contact your state representatives in support of this legislation.

Women Deserve Equal Pay

Last week the Senate was only three votes short of a vote to advance the Fair Pay Restoration Act to the floor for debate and a vote.  This bill would ensure that individuals are able to fight pay discrimination at work.  Thank our New York State Senators for supporting this bill and reach out to your friends across the country to call on their Senators to support fair pay for women.  With your help, we won the battle in the House of Representatives to restore our equal pay rights. Now, let's get the Senate on board!

Support the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act
Now that the Supreme Court has demonstrated it is no longer willing to put the health of women first, we need to ensure that New York's law is updated to protect women's health and remain beacon for choice. This act will safeguard a women's right to access safe and legal abortion. Support the Act

Bias Busters:
Help Us Monitor Sexist Media Coverage

NOW-NYC is always on Media Watch to report biased coverage and advocate for diversity of media ownership and participation. Now you can help us take on the presidential election. From the outset of the campaign, sexism against Senator Hillary Clinton has been rampant, from inane discussions in major media outlets on cleavage to Pat Buchanan's recent comments on MSNBC degrading Senator Clinton and all women. Find out how you can help us with our "Bias Busters" campaign. More info.

Birth Control Cri$is!!!
Birth control costs have risen dramatically (up to 10 times!) since the Deficit Reduction Act took effect this year, leaving students and low-income women out in the cold. The act effectively ended the discounted rates that college health centers and safety-net providers like Planned Parenthood had available to them to provide wide access to birth control. NOW-NYU and other student groups held a rally calling on Congress to restore affordable access!
