Welcome to the New York City Chapter of the National Organization for Women!
| NOW-NYC is proud to be the founding chapter of NOW. Since 1966 we have worked to advance the women and girls of New York City through public education, grassroots organizing, lobbying, action, and advocacy. NOW-NYC aims to end violence against women, advance women in the workplace, promote reproductive freedom, transform images of women in the media, and secure equality for LGBT people. Some of our recent work in these areas includes: |
Helping Sexually Exploited Girls. We fought for victims in New York by helping attain passage of the Safe Harbor for Exploited Youth Act through public education, media outreach, and lobbying. The bill expands needed services and housing for sexually exploited youth. Now, the first time a 12-year-old girl sold by her pimp on Craigslist goes before a judge, she will be connected with services instead of juvenile jail. Fostering Economic Justice. We initiated a Women & Money public education series to empower women financially and a specialized financial clinic for recently divorced women. We have also promoted career advancement and fought for pay equity for women in the workplace. Protecting Choice. We pushed for the passage of the Reproductive Health Act, by meeting face-to-face with legislators in Albany and across the city and facilitating education and trainings for the community about the bill to ensure that reproductive rights are ironclad in New York State. Giving Women a Powerful Voice. We launched a Bias Busters Campaign to report and respond to biased media coverage and to advocate for diversity of media ownership and participation. We continue to act as a voice for progressive women with the national and local media. <<Back
