Action Committees and Groups All Action Committees meet at Activist Night, held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm NEXT ACTIVIST NIGHT: Tuesday, August 10, 2010
Each Activist Night meeting focuses on an issue with the goal to improve the activist tools of our members, volunteers and friends. These tools include learning how to write a letter-to-the editor, how to table effectively, and more! All Action Committees meet following the general meeting. To RSVP or ask a question, please see the Action Committee descriptions below. Another reason to join us: "Joining a group that meets even just once a month produces the same happiness gain as doubling your income." - David Brooks, The New York Times, 3/30/2010. Read more.
Trafficking Action NetworkBecome a part of NOW-NYC's ongoing campaign: Ending the Business of Human Trafficking in New York City by raising community awareness of human trafficking throughout New York. NOW-NYC has been advocating on behalf of exploited victims by lobbying for comprehensive and effective legislation that appropriately penalizes traffickers and helps victims and educating local businesses about their role in this illegal industry in the effort to break the cycle of enslavement. In June of 2007, New York State passed its first anti-human trafficking law, and in 2008 we helped secure the Safe Harbor for Exploited Youth Act. While this is a huge step forward, there is still work to be done to ensure that the law is implemented as effectively as possible. The group is currently working to make sure cops and other first responders get the training they need to best respond to trafficking victims and put away pimps. Join us! Please email Chanelle Pearson at chanellepearson@gmail.com to RSVP or find out more information. Trafficking Campaign

The committee is currently working towards the passage of the New York State's Reproductive Health Act. For more information and to RSVP, please email NOW-NYC at contact@nownyc.org. NOW at NYU The NOW-NYU chapter at New York University is open to graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in discussing feminist issues and becoming activists, both on campus and on a city, state, and national level. Past campaigns have included, sponsoring the V-day initiative fund raising performance of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. More than 70 NYU students joined the chapter to attend the Emergency March for Women'sLives in Washington DC, and in coalition with other activists groups spearheaded the Emergency Coalition for Abortion Rights at NYU. For more information, please contact Nikita Shah (nks249@nyu.edu) or Shahida Arabi (sa1523@nyu.edu), both co-presidents for the 2010-2011 school year. Also, check out the great NOW-NYU blog here.
Please note: If you are interested in a particular area not covered by one of our committees, please let us know. As a grassroots organization, our activisim arises from our Action Committees and we establish new committees when there is sufficient interest among members who are available to work on the issues. In the past we have had committees working on eliminating racisim, anti-violence issues, media reform, women's health, family relations, women in prison, education, and outreach on college campuses. Call us 212.627.9895 and let us know what issue you would like to work on. Back To The Top
