Protest Backpage.com's Facilitation of Sex Trafficking

November 16th, 2011, 4 to 7PM
Join NOW-NYC, The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW), and Prostitution Research and Education (PRE) to protest in front of the offices of Village Voice Media Holdings, LLC, owner of Backpage.com, as we hold Village Voice accountable for its role in the rank exploitation of others. Since August, 51 Attorneys General have called upon Backpage to cease its facilitation of sex trafficking.  They have cited more than 50 cases across 22 U.S. states in the past three years that involve Backpage’s facilitation of sex trafficking.

Backpage generates an estimated $2 million per month largely by functioning as a virtual red light district for pimps/traffickers and johns in the U.S. and at least 10 other countries.  Village Voice Media Holdings, LLC displays a reckless disregard for human rights and could instead act to create a sex trafficking free Internet by no longer hosting prostitution ads through Backpage.

Join us  We call upon Village Voice Media Holdings, LLC to engage in corporate responsibility by ceasing to host ads that facilitate sex trafficking on Backpage.

She Asked For It: How Rape Myths Hurt Us All

Wednesday, September 14, 6:00 PM
Watch the video footage from the event!
Two cops are acquitted of rape.  The DSK case falls apart.  A former sportscaster buys a 14-year old girl for sex and gets community service.  A high school orders one of its students to pay its legal fees after she filed a 'frivilous' lawsuit for being forced to cheer for a classmate who admitted to sexually assaulting her.  From courtrooms to hospital exam rooms, from police precincts to college campuses, how do stereotypes about rape fuel the epidemic of rape and impact a survivor's ability to get justice? Join our discussion and ignite change.

Special Guests:
Helen Benedict, novelist and journalist, she has covered the issue of rape around the world. She authored Sand Queen, a novel of the Iraq War, The Lonely Soldier, about women in the military, and Virgin or Vamp: How the Press Covers Sex Crimes, an analysis of the way sex, race and class bias affect rape coverage.

Karen Carroll, Associate Director of the Bronx Sexual Assault Response Team, is a forensic specialist and survivor who trains police departments, DA’s offices and social service professionals, and testified in the NYPD rape trial of Moreno and Mata.

Jane Manning
, President of NOW-NYC, is a long-time New York City activist who has worked extensively to improve the criminal justice system’s response to sex crimes. She is a former sex crimes prosecutor.

Nancy Schwartzman, filmmaker, activist and survivor, and creator of The Line Campaign—a non-profit organization and movement empowering young leaders to create a world without sexual violence.

John Stoltenberg is the creator of Men Can Stop Rape’s “My Duty” campaign, a sexual-assault-prevention media campaign, which was licensed to the U.S. Department of Defense and distributed on military bases around the world. John is also the DC Rape Crisis Center communications consultant.

Raising Our Voices: Demand NYC Leaders Take Rape Seriously

Tuesday, June 28, 9AM | Foley Square (in front of Manhattan Supreme Court House)
Rally with NOW-NYC and the Connect the Dots Coalition to demand that the city of New York and the justice system Take Rape Seriously. The sentencing of NYPD Officers Moreno and Mata - who were found guilty of official misconduct but acquitted of the more serious crime of rape – is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 9am. They were convicted of official misconduct for making three unauthorized return trips to a woman’s apartment, even placing a phony 911 call to buy themselves more time inside the residence of a woman they had been called to protect. Ex- Officer Moreno, while denying the rape allegation, actually testified that he got into this semi-conscious woman’s bed while she was wearing nothing but a bra.

This outrageous conduct was a clear betrayal of the officers’ duty to protect this member of the public. Their misconduct leaves NYC women forced to wonder whether a police officer called in a moment of need will be a protector or a predator.

Organized by Connect the Dots, a coalition comprised of CONNECT, Crime Victims Treatment Center, Feministing.com, National Organization for Women (NOW-NYC), The Healing Center, New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault and Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN). We are a diverse NYC based coalition of advocates and organizations working to prevent violence and sexual assault in our city and promote women’s health and rights. Along with NYC Council members, activists and survivors we are coming together to “connect the dots” between the sentencing of Officers Moreno and Mata, and the larger issue of Violence Against Women!

A Promising Economic Strategy: More Women in Leadership Positions

June 13, 1:00 PM | Demos | 220 Fifth Avenue, 5th Floor | New York NY 10001
Join the discussion on strategies for advancing the role of women in leadership positions with NOW-NYC and other leading workplace equality advocates at this panel event. Panelists will examine how and why the US is lagging behind, what strategies can make a difference, and why and how some international and business groups are pressing for change.

Moderator:
Linda Tarr-Whelan - Distinguished Senior Fellow, Demos

Speakers:
Julie Burton - President, Women's Media Center
Ursula Wynhoven - Head, Policy and Legal Special Assistant to the Executive Director, UN Global Compact Office
Kathleen McQuiggan - Vice President, PAX
Sally D'Amato - Principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP, United States Federal Practice

Increasingly, institutions across the world are understanding the need for inclusive decision-making and, in particular, the impact women can have when incorporated into leadership structures. Some US companies and the leaders of a number of other countries like Norway, Spain, South Africa, Australia, and Germany, among others are using a variety of tools to change the dynamics of overwhelmingly male boards of directors and/or management committees. Strong research results show that the 30% Solution, a critical mass of women at power tables, changes bottom-line outcomes in positive ways in government and corporations. In this time of economic restructuring, 170 CEOs have signed onto the UN Women and the UN Global Compact's Women's Empowerment Principles because they see this as a part of the solution. American companies, though, are lagging behind.

Show Your Support for Violence Survivors

After a 6-week long trial where mounting evidence and emotional testimony documented the sexual assault of an intoxicated woman by a NYPD officer that was called to her aid, the two officers involved were convicted of only three counts of official misconduct.  Kenneth Moreno (charged with rape) and Franklin Mata (charged as the lookout) face only a maximum of one year in jail for an outrageous night on patrol that, at the very least, consisted of an entire series of actions completely outside of the realm of their responsibilities as police officers and, at the worst, ended in the rape of a woman they were supposed to be protecting.

Rally to TAKE RAPE SERIOUSLY

Protest on the Day of Tony Simmons Sentencing!

1st Rally held Tuesday, November 9th, 12:30 PM | 2nd Rally held Monday, November 15th, 12:45 PM
111 Centre Street, NYC (between Leonard & White; 6, Q, N, R, J, Z to Canal St.)
Take a few minutes on your lunch hour to stand strong against violence that targets women and girls. Thanks to so many supporters and protesters, our first rally sent a strong message that we will not stand by and let rapists get out of jail free.
See news coverage here.

We need to keep speaking out against this egregious case in which Tony Simmons, a guard for the Department of Juvenile Justice who pled guilty to raping one girl and sexually assaulting two others, may get probation with no jail time.

It's more critical than ever that we are there on sentencing day to let the Judge, the D.A.'s office, the NYPD, and the community know that Rape Is a Real Crime, and we won't tolerate a criminal justice system that doesn't treat it that way.

Send an email to contact@nownyc.org if you plan to attend.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:
NOW-NYC and anti-violence advocates from across the city are joining forces to ask Justice Cassandra Mullen to give convicted rapist, Tony Simmons, a sentence with jail time.  Recently, the Manhattan Supreme Court Justice proposed a sentence of ten years probation with absolutely no jail time for a Department of Juvenile Justice counselor--Tony Simmons--who pled guilty to raping one girl and sexually assaulting two others that he was transporting to Manhattan Family Court.

In one of the instances, the assailant allegedly brought a 15-year-old girl entrusted to his custody down to the basement of the court building to rape her. Just moments after the attack he escorted her to her scheduled court appearance.  If Simmons, convicted of sexually assaulting three teen girls can get off without any jail time, what does that mean for women victims of rape across the city?  We need to send a message to Justice Mullen, law enforcement, our leaders, and our community to Take Rape Seriously!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Supersexxxed: Porn and Pop Culture

Wednesday, September 29 at 6:30 PM
NOW-NYC hosts internationally acclaimed activist, scholar and social critic Gail Dines, author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality. The Internet has drastically changed the $96 billion dollar porn industry. No longer confined to the pages of Playboy, porn is first viewed by boys at the average age of 11 years old. Competition and consumer desensitization have pushed porn to new extremes, and the impact is seeping into our every day lives. Whether it's film, television, music videos or magazine ads, our visual landscape has been "pornified." Join us for an unflinching look at how today's pornography has become a cultural force - transforming our sexual identities, attitudes and relationships.

Please note: this presentation will contain graphic images.

NOW-NYC Protests Ralph Lauren's Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Sunday, December 20th from 1 pm - 2pm @ 72nd & Madison Avenue at Ralph Lauren
Have you seen the latest string of ads Ralph Lauren is churning out?
Ralph Lauren's latest ads depict photo-shopped models that even Barbie couldn't compete with.  Apparently, one of the biggest labels in fashion thinks that women's heads should be wider than their waists.  Join us to demonstrate that women and girls are proud to take up space--and we will take up space this Sunday in front of Ralph Lauren's flagship store with your help!

• Demand that Ralph Lauren stop issuing ads that depict women as sick and waif-like.
• Call for new industry-wide standards: Real women demand real images!
• Force new regulations that photo-shopped and airbrushed images contain disclaimers.

Contact the Ralph Lauren Headquarters in NYC to demand that the company put an end to its grossly misinformed portrayal of women. Do not wait idly by as women's bodies are "shooped" and edited beyond reality.

Saturday, September 19th, 7pm
NOW-NYC President Sonia Ossorio will lead a discussion on human trafficking after this Saturday's 7 pm showing of Fatal Promises, a controversial new documentary that takes an in-depth and refreshingly honest look into the scourge of human trafficking. Through personal stories of victims of trafficking and interviews with politicians, non-governmental organizations and prominent spokespeople like Emma Thompson and Gloria Steinem, Fatal Promises cleverly juxtaposes the brutal realities of human trafficking suffered by victims and battled by activists, with the hollow rhetoric of politicians and pundits who claim to be making significant strides in combating this horrific crime against humanity.

Pressuring Corporate Giants for Equality:
NOW-NYC Hosts Martha Burk

Thursday, September 17, 6:30 pm
Martha Burk, Director of the Corporate Responsibility Project at the National Council of Women's Organizations, author of Cult of Power-Sex Discrimination in Corporate America, and Money Editor for Ms. Magazine talks about taking on the giants.

As the largest employers in the U.S., corporations need to be held accountable for treating their employees fairly. Though women have made many cracks in it, the glass ceiling is still in place and women face a host of obstacles in climbing the corporate ladder- including care-giving and pregnancy discrimination, harassment, and pay inequity. Corporations have the opportunity to set a new agenda and impact millions of workers by instituting policies that forcefully combat discrimination and help advance women in the workplace.

Held at the NOW-NYC office: 150 W. 28th St., Suite 304 @ 7th Avenue, NYC.

Women, Power & Pay - Thursday, May 21st

Learn more about the important work NOW-NYC is doing to advance women and girls and how you can get involved.  All members should join us for a vote to fill two open board positions.  Learn more about the vote.

7:00 pm - Women, Power & Pay Program Starts

Forget about 9 to 5. If women worked the equivalent of what their work is valued, they’d be walking out at 3:15! What will it take for women to gain the same earning power as men? Women-dominated fields pay far less—and as we saw with Lilly Ledbetter—pay discrimination persists. With the economy in bad shape, it’s even more critical to slam the door shut on the “wage gap” once and for all. Learn about New York City’s anti-discrimination laws, the changing landscape of the workplace, and what we’re doing to secure fair pay and better workplace policies for women and families.

Join NOW-NYC President Sonia Ossorio, New York Women’s Agenda Vice President Beverly Neufeld, A Better Balance's Equal Justice Works Fellow and Project Attorney Phoebe Taubman, and NYC Human Rights Deputy Commissioner Cliff Mulqueen in confronting the issue head-on, and learn what you can do to expand women’s power and pay.

distorting reality[1]_2.jpgBe a part of our live studio audience for this special event!
Bachelors with former restraining orders, plastic surgery competitions and women as stupid, shallow, or "slutty" gold-diggers. Such is life in reality TV, where advertisers and producers manufacture biased caricatures of women and people of color for millions of viewers. Reality TV edits life to reinforce some of our culture's most regressive stereotypes. How are these negative portrayals of gender and race  seeping into everyday life and what is the impact for women and people of color? It's time for a reality check.

Birth Control Cri$is Rally!!!

Monday, November 12th, 4:45 pm - 6:00 pm
Birth control costs have risen dramatically (up to 10 times!) since the Deficit Reduction Act took effect this year, leaving students and low-income women out in the cold. The act effectively ended the discounted rates that college health centers and safety-net providers like Planned Parenthood had available to them to provide wide access to birth control. As a result, affordable birth control has become out of reach for many college women. For example, the cost of a pack of birth control on some campuses has risen from $5 to nearly $50 a month!

Featuring Special Guest Speakers, U.S. Representative Joseph Crowley, NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Meena Shah from NYU Voices for Choice, and others! Join NYU: Voices for Choice, NOW-NYU,
and NYU Law Students for Reproductive Justice in sending Congress a message to restore affordable access! Meet at Washington Square Park.
