Undergraduate and Graduate Student Internships
Summer 2010 (Internships last from May-August: start/end dates flexible-12 week minimum)
The National Organization for Women-New York City is seeking women's rights interns to support work in the areas of Programs, Development, and Organizing.
NOW-NYC advocates for the women and girls of New York City by promoting reproductive health, aiming to achieve economic empowerment, and fighting to end discrimination and violence against women. We work to gain equality for women and promote social change through action in several key areas, including: Human Trafficking and Violence Against Women, Women in the Workplace, Images of Women in the Media, Reproductive Freedom, and LGBTQ Rights.
Interns are vital to the work of NOW-NYC. Interns are involved in: planning and implementing NOW-NYC actions and events, conducting policy research and community outreach, supporting our communications efforts, including our newsletter and Web site, contributing to ongoing projects, and assisting operations and development efforts. The Service Fund of NOW-NYC runs a Helpline and several legal clinics, and interns provide appropriate referral resource information to women needing help.
Applicants must be professional, responsible, dedicated to achieving women's rights, and committed to the mission of NOW-NYC. The internship is unpaid and requires a minimum of 16 hours per week throughout the spring/fall semesters (or equivalent of 2 full days) and a minimum of 32 hours per week during the summer (4-5 full days). Your schedule must permit a minimum of 4 hour blocks of time in the office. Note: NOW-NYC will work with students’ schools as needed to help interns attain school credit in the cases where it is available.
Programs Information: Program work is focused on supporting and advancing all of our chapter's programmatic work in our key issue areas, such as contributing to event planning and outreach, major communications including Web site updates, implementing our direct service clinics, creating our newsletter, and conducting policy research. Development Information: Development work is focused on fundraising activities including: event planning for our major award ceremonies/fundraising events, grant-writing, phone-banking, developing marketing strategies, and building our donor relations.
Organizing Information: Our organizing efforts require hours on some weekends and evenings and focuses on building and implementing a membership outreach program for our chapter. Work will include: creating/attending trainings for tabling and outreach; researching outreach venues; and conducting tabling and outreach at parks, events, fairs, and campuses across NYC. Application Instructions To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter indicating where you learned about our internship, what you hope to gain from the internship and what you have to offer to NOW-NYC. Please indicate what work areas you prefer. We will consider applications for the Spring 2010 positions on a rolling basis.
