NOW-NYC Advocating for the Women & Girls of NYC NOW-NYC works to promote reproductive health, secure economic empowerment and end discrimination and violence against women. Learn more about our current campaigns below. Promoting Reproductive Rights NOW-NYC stands strong to protect and promote the fundamental right of women to control her reproductive health. One of our key areas of focus this year is passing the Reproductive Health Act in New York State. The Reproductive Health Act will (1) affirm choice as a right in our state law, (2) affirm the right to choose or refuse contraception, (3) ensure that a woman can access abortion throughout her pregnancy if her life or HEALTH is in danger, and (4) update our law so that abortion is regulated as a matter of public health and not by an exception in our criminal code (as it is currently handled). Securing Economic Empowerment NOW-NYC supports the NYS Fair Pay Act which would require equal pay for equal or comparable work and would protect workers from retaliation for sharing salary information. We hold actions annually on Equal Pay Day to raise awareness about the inequities that still exist, and we're fighting for other reforms that would advance women at work: extending protections to caregivers, supporting paid sick leave, and rallying with local garment workers for lost wages. We are advocating for divorce reforms that would give fair settlements to women (called Post-Marital Income). We deliver a Women & Money series of programs and education efforts. Learn More
Ending Violence Against Women NOW-NYC has been a leader in fighting human trafficking here in New York City. We led the way for the first ever anti-human trafficking law in New York State, and we lobbied to pass the Safe Harbor Act, which would provide housing and services to commercially sexually exploited youth. We're currently advocating for the funding and implementation of these laws, and we're continuing our public education efforts on the issue. Learn More
Fighting Discrimination
NOW-NYC is fighting discrimination on multiple fronts: we aim to end sexism, combat racism, and expand rights for lesbian and gay individuals. NOW-NYC has an active program to combat sexist images of women in advertising and in the media. We rallied against "extreme" photoshopping seen in Ralph Lauren's ads. We are expanding our Bias Busters program which highlights sexist images and uses public pressure to stop them. Our annual Love Your Body Day program aims to celebrate positive images of women. We fight against discrimination of LGBT people and have lobbied for equal marriage. Our Queer Advocacy Project is currently organizing our contingent in this year's PRIDE march.
