A recent study conducted by the New York City Council found that 94 percent of 155 pharmacies surveyed make "Plan B" available over the counter, in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration's approval for sale. This is a successful measure in helping to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and potential abortions, and NOW-NYC supports the widespread availability of "Plan B." However, the study also found that the average price of Emergency Contraception at New York City pharmacies is $41.84, higher than the price at which it was sold by prescription only.
When you consider that nearly 17 million women nationwide are in need of subsidized contraceptive services, it becomes clear that not all women can afford to spend $40+ on Emergency Contraception. Financial obstacles pose a real threat to low-income women's ability to obtain "Plan B," the immediate consequences of which may include unwanted pregnancies and/or resulting abortions.
