Attention NOW-NYC Members: Vote for Open Board Positions Meaghan Carey and Maureen Shaw, both long-time volunteers and current NOW-NYC board members at-large, are running to fill two open board seats. Meaghan Carey is running for VP of Development. Maureen Shaw is running for Director of Membership. The vote will take place at the May membership meeting at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 21st at the NOW-NYC office. For more information, please call 212.627.9895 or email contact@nownyc.org. Meaghan Carey has been a lifelong feminist. Before she even knew about the women’s movement, she was fighting her parents for her right to wear pants to church on Sundays. While attending Hamilton College, she was on the Board of the Sexual Assault Center. While on the Board, she organized Take Back The Nights, brought the Clothesline Project to the school, and organized and performed in The Vagina Monologues. She joined the NOW-NYC in 2006 as a summer intern and later became a deputy director. Meaghan is especially interested in policy and politic and she recently completed her law degree at New York Law. Maureen Shaw, a publicist by profession and long-time feminist, works to educate the community on issues pertinent to reproductive freedom and ensure that New York remains a beacon for women's rights. Empowering women is a priority for Maureen and she believes that creating an open forum for discussion is a critical step in bringing visibility to issues that affect women. Since becoming involved with NOW-NYC, Maureen has researched the cost of EC in Manhattan pharmacies, urged the passing of the Prevention First Act, and lobbied for sponsorship of the Freedom of Choice Act. Maureen holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from James Madison University and is currently pursuing her Master's in Human Rights at Columbia University.
