Fighting Violence Against Women Relationship violence is a reality for thousands of women each day. According to statistics provided by the NYC Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, police responded to over 250,000 domestic violence incidents in 2009 and the NYPD's Domestic Violence Unit conducted almost 70,000 home visits in 2009- a 70% increase since 2002. NOW-NYC is working to help shed light on the enormous problem of domestic abuse and the destruction it causes in the lives of so many women across the city, while also promoting a legislative agenda that would help put an end to the epidemic of violence against women. ................................................................................................................................................................. Keeping Guns Out of the Hands of Abusers We pushed hard to pass a new law making sure our courts are providing the correct information to the FBI on individuals convicted of crimes involving domestic violence. Thousands of Domestic Abusers Charged We led an effort to make choking a crime in New York and to close a legal loophole that let this violent crime go unpunished. Since the new law took effect, more than 2,000 abusers have been charged. DCJS Press Release | Our Op-Ed | Arrests Under New Law
................................................................................................................................................................. (2010) Victory for Women: NOW-NYC Secures Passage of Anti-Strangulation Bill Strangulation is common in domestic violence and sex crime cases, and surviving victims describe strangulation as an agonizing and terrifying ordeal. It is also highly dangerous. It only takes 11 pounds of pressure, applied for just 10 seconds, to choke someone unconscious. With more pressure, death can occur within minutes. Incredibly, until June 2010, the agonizing, terrifying, and life-threatening act of cutting off someone's air supply was not a crime unless physical injury was evident. But choking very often leaves few or no visible signs. In June 2010, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed anti-strangulation legislation with overwhelming and bipartisan support. NOW-NYC helped to secure the Anti-Strangulation Bill, giving recourse to battered women and sexual assault victims who have faced this extreme form of abuse.
