NOW-NYC PAC Endorsements 2009

NOW-NYC Endorses Mark Green for Public Advocate
As New York City's first Public Advocate, Green demonstrated his commitment to women by organizing a management-labor-feminist coalition to enact a bill prohibiting the practice of workplace discrimination against domestic violence victims. Green supports a plethora of issues that NOW-NYC advocates for on a daily basis, such as the enforcement of Title IX, the Reproductive Health Act, the Fair Pay Act, the legalization of same-sex marriage and increased funding for the NYS Anti-Human Trafficking Law. NOW-NYC is confident that with Mark Green serving as Public Advocate, women can expect real change and greater confidence in their healthcare system, educational institutions and workplace equity policy.

NOW-NYC Endorses Leslie Crocker Snyder for Manhattan DA

Leslie Crocker Snyder has more than 30 years experience in New York City's criminal justice system. She co-wrote the Rape Shield Law, which makes the sexual histories of rape survivors in-admissible in court, and she founded the first Sex Crimes Bureau in the country. NOW-NYC believes she is the right candidate for the job: As Manhattan DA, she promises to relentlessly go after the pimps and traffickers who exploit women and girls and to create specialized bureaus dedicated to the areas of human trafficking, sex crimes, elder abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse. She's committed to boldly increasing the transparency and accountability of the DA's office by releasing statistics not only on convictions, but on arrests, indictments and plea bargains. NOW-NYC believes Leslie Crocker Snyder is the candidate who will most effectively address the epidemic of violence against women and girls.

NOW-NYC Endorses Gale Brewer for Council Member for District 6
As the City Council incumbent for district 6, Gale Brewer demonstrated her dedication to women's rights as a force in the 2005 passage of New York City's Human Rights Law, one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws in the country and one that prohibits employment and housing discrimination based on gender identity and sexual harassment history, among other things. Brewer also supported the Domestic Workers Law, and will introduce legislation on paid sick leave August 2009. Her record in the Council attests to a strong history of promoting progressive laws. NOW-NYC is confident that with Gale Brewer in the City Council for another term, New Yorkers will have someone fighting for their rights.

NOW-NYC Endorses Jessica Lappin for Council Member for Dist. 5
As the City Council incumbent for district 5, Jessica Lappin has worked tirelessly to defend women's rights in our city. She supported the effort to pass the Clinic Access Bill, which protects women's rights to reproductive healthcare. Lappin also worked alongside local organizations to fight the epidemic of breast cancer by providing free mammograms to low-income women in her district. She also secured funding for a variety of crucial issues, including domestic violence victim support. NOW-NYC is confident that with Jessica Lappin in the City Council for another term, there will be a viable platform on which to fight for equality and rights of New York City women and girls.

NOW-NYC Endorses Alan Gerson for Council Member for District 1
As the City Council incumbent for district 1, Alan Gerson drafted the Dignity in All Schools Act to take preventative measures against bullying, which includes teasing and inappropriate physical contact to girls. Gerson also initiated the city's first funded program to support victims of human trafficking, ensuring that adequate funding is allocated to the victims of human trafficking. NOW-NYC is confident that with Alan Gerson in the City Council for another term, New Yorkers will have someone fighting for equality.
